The author blends fictional characters with real-life persons of the day in standout scenes with depth and creativity. The personal details of characters in 'Jack of Spades' offer an understanding about the major players in that war, their motivations and perceptions of the struggle.

David Lucero's "Jack of Spades" is a riveting work of historical fiction set in the North African desert campaign of His title character becomes involved in a perilous British raid on a key German Afrika Korps base, a raid that could well cost him his life. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Conlee, author of "Lion at Twilight" and other historical novels. The author does an excellent job of conveying the challenges and strategies deployed in the desert, away from the larger focus in Europe.
We get to follow the leaders' Jack of spades stories of both sides. Seeing the differences in Allied equipment and Axis equipment, complete with the various speeds and capabilities of tanks and other war craft add so much to the story and understanding of why things happened Jack of spades stories way they did.
The story jumps around between Allies and Germans, giving the reader perspective from both sides. The author uses wandering snapshots to cover a lot of ground and follow the action going on in the air and sea as well. Towards the end, the action really picks up and things do get bloodier as is inevitable in a story about WWII, but the bulk of the story focuses on strategy from both sides of the battle and the broader picture.
The war was not being fought inside a vacuum of course and it was refreshing to see the author including natural obstacles and problems that had to be dealt with, like sandstorms and scorpions and such. Overall, Jack of Spades is an interesting read and there were times the descriptions of the desert environment had me trying to wipe the sand off my feet before coming back inside.

Jack Ruggero the main character of this story. The Battle of North Africa reached the maximum level after a two-year war; the Germans strike a catastrophic blast antagonistic toward the British. As a result, Jack finds himself drafted into the U. He must be strong for what's to come. Jack's character is raw, never weak. He played his cards right.
All the soldiers are warriors; some will win, and some will lose for our freedom. Jack has one thing on his mind to survive this horrific battle.
Will Jack keep an ace of card up in his sleeve? Only time will tell. There is always a gamble coming out alive the men fumble, and some die, get hurt, and almost finished the battle. What a fascinating read with so much action and brave men and the details of courage fighting the enemies.
They will make mistakes and will bring consequences. They have seen the silence of the night and hear the screams in the morning light. The author, David Lucero's words, take you in combat, written in such a captivating way, couldn't put the book down. The military of the world the integrity of their intent.
You never give up on freedom. Battles will end, more wars will begin, a neverending story always collateral damage in the life around them. The author is very talented in weaving a factual and fictional narrative—a quick pace—an Honorable and fantastic read.

A very realistic War World Two story. It is not usually that I read a historical novel, even more so, one about the wars in the 19th century. I am glad that I did, primarily, that this one was focused mainly on the events in North Africa that I knew less about. The author stayed true to some actual events and characters from WWII and created an exciting story around them. The novel is full of action but with many psychological, military, and political elements that made the story complete.

I have also enjoyed seeing different points of view about the war through all the characters. The verbal interactions between Jack and Major Lawrence brought their share of excitement too.
That made the book even more enriching. His skills in playing cards kept him safe for a big part of the war, but nothing lasts forever. Will SAS manage to stop Rommel?
